This Brainstorm Tech Tip is sent as a service to all Brainstorm Internet customers to offer easy answers to common questions and to provide information that may be beneficial to help improve our customers' Internet experience. The following is an example of a question that we are frequently asked along with the helpful answer.

Dear Brainstorm,
I was trying to check my email this morning and I got the error message “Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.”  Nothing will come in or go out!  I had to use webmail to send you this message.  What’s up?
...Teri in Durango

Dear Teri,
Errors like this can be frustrating because they don't give you a specific cause to a problem. For this particular error our advice for the quickest fix is simply to reboot your computer.  (When rebooting to clear a problem, the most successful method is to shut down the computer and leave it off for 10 or 15 seconds, then start it up again.  This makes sure that the RAM memory is cleared of any errors that could possibly stay in there if you are doing a restart rather than a shutdown and wait).

Most email errors regarding the “server” actually refer to an AntiVirus service which has crashed.  Most people have an AntiVirus program that scans email before it is received or sent.  The chain of processing, or path, that your emails take within your computer is Mail Program -> Antivirus Scanner -> Brainstorm (for outgoing email) or Brainstorm -> Antivirus Scanner -> Mail Program (for incoming email).

What this means is that as far as your email program is concerned, the AntiVirus scanner IS the server because it is next in the chain of processing. So when you see "the server has unexpectedly terminated the connection", this error is being generated from your AntiVirus program and not from Brainstorm.

If rebooting the computer doesn’t fix the problem, give our helpful tech support folks a call at 970-247-1442 or 877-651-6299. Choose option 5 for tech support and we'll help you get up and running again.

As always we thank you for choosing Brainstorm Internet! We appreciate you as our customer and invite you to stop by our offices anytime if you have a question or a problem, or if you just want to say hi to our friendly staff.
